Claiming the Dream

In Claiming the Dream: The Victorious Campaign of Douglas Wilder of Virginia (Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 1990), Margaret recorded the tumultuous events that led to the 1989 victory of the nation’s first popularly elected African American governor. Wilder’s election in the state where black slaves first set foot in America “is a great American story. It’s a great world story,” concluded the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

Strikingly captures the heartbeat of the historic campaign in which Virginia, the cradle of the Confederacy, chooses as her Governor the grandson of slaves.
